ACSM AMERICAN FITNESS INDEX (AFI) GRAPHIC DESIGN INTERN

Background:  The ACSM American Fitness Index (AFI) program releases a ranking report of the health and fitness status of the 50 largest metro areas in late May each year (www.AmericanFitnessIndex.org).  The AFI Data Report serves as a scientific, objective assessment of each city’s strengths and challenges, and effectively informs local decision-making that can enhance the quality of life for the population. The AFI Graphic Design Intern position has the opportunity to work on graphic design projects for the AFI program at the American College of Sports Medicine during the month of May.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Create individual infographics for the 50 local cities
  • Work on social media plan for infographics
  • Create program promotional graphics as needed

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  1. Knowledge of communications/public relations principles, practices, and the ability to apply such knowledge to community program processes. Attention to detail and razor-sharp editing skills.
  2. Skills in graphic design, marketing, communications, public relations and social media. Willingness to learn how to translate data to infographics and social media platforms for a professional program.
  3. Ability to analyze/accurately evaluate the program’s target audience needs and educational efforts, function effectively in a wide variety of settings, and exhibit tact and diplomacy.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  A student currently working towards a Bachelor’s Degree in graphic design, communications, journalism, public relations or a related field and looking to translate classroom learnings to a professional environment is preferred.  Recent graduates are also eligible. Previous work experience in an office setting is helpful, but training will be provided.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF POSITION: 

This is a short-term, paid internship position with a flexible schedule for the month of May 2017. The position will be housed at the American College of Sports Medicine office at 401 W. Michigan St. in Indianapolis.

The AFI Communications Intern position has the opportunity to work on a robust national media plan for the AFI program at the American College of Sports Medicine during the month of May.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Update AFI Social Media Schedule and draft messages for 2017 release
  • Customize and load 50 local city releases
  • Update AFI contact list (mayor’s office, health departments, parks departments, etc.)
  • Prepare and mail 2017 AFI postcard
  • Writing and editing of blog posts
  • Update twitter handle promo list
  • Track data metrics for a media evaluation report
